about

Compositions for chamber ensemble based on Oliver Messiaen's Modes of Limited Transpositions. The ensemble consists of String Trio, Clarinet, Bassoon, Flute, Oboe, with touches of Trumpet and French Horn.

Messiaen created seven modes (scales); each may be transposed a fixed number of times before returning to the original set of notes (hence the name "Limited Transpositions"). Additionally, each mode divides the notes into overlapping, equally sized groups of 2 to 6 notes, with each group having identical half tone/whole tone patterns.

This collection took more time than usual for me to complete, some 8 months. Mostly this was because I needed extra time to get the instruments to sound right together, particularly in passages with unusual harmonies. The actual composing came quite quickly. Also, I originally set out to create seven pieces, one for each mode, but having completed that, I decided to do seven more.

Kudos to my sister June McClean for the artwork.
